Driveshaft center bearing droning noise-'87- 740T wagon M46 700

Replaced the center bearing a few weeks ago with more than an average amount of trouble, I know you need a press, but with a little ingenuity, whizzy tool and a big hammer it can be done. OK everything is going good and there are a couple of shields or rock guards that press on the shaft itself on either side of the bearing. The first attempt at installing the support and bearing caused the rubber support to contact the rock guard and locked it up. Second attempt, installed the assembly only to the point of just barely making contact with the guard.(turned freely) Should I throw the guards away so everything is positioned correctly? I know it's a sealed bearing and should be OK. But?
Also the droning is not constant, do not notice above 45-50 mph or below 15-20 mph. And the front of the driveshaft(near the rubber disc) is warm to the touch, seems like the disc should act as an insulator from engine/trans heat.
Planning on pulling ot down tonight to check for obvious damage. Any ideas or input is welcome.
Thanks
