Is the I6 a good engine? 900

I'm thinking about buying a 960, but I've heard the engine doesn't give the kind of acceleration the hp rating reflects (is it around 180hp?). I've owned 760 turbos and hate the lag. I just want a powerful rear wheel drive wagon (courting BMW and Mercedes), is that so wrong?
