Volvo 240 Engine Problem 200 1986

My wife broke down in our 86 240 Wagon with 208,000 miles. It was towed to a garage. I went to the car and tried to start it. It did start to kick over but gave an awful schreech in the process. A second attempt gave the same results. It started for a couple of minutes with low power and continuing noise. I shut it down. The timing belt was replaced about 25,000 miles ago. I checked the oil which was fine.

Can anyone give any theories before the guy from the garage calls me tomorrow.

I would appreciate it. Thanks.
