Steering & Air Bag 900 1992

I need to take cover off steering wheel to check on internal (ground) wiring for horn. I tried prying cover off...does not seem like a easy task. What do I need to do to get cover off and do I have to worry of about the airbag being activated while I am working on the cover? I was advised to disconnect battery over nite before working on steering wheel.
