A couple of years ago my 80 wagon (manual transmission) would occasionally when I put it into first have a hesitation from the back, almost like the back wheels were not gripping on the pavement, then a "thump" and then it would go. A few months later I did not think it was going to get going at all, groaning/clunking noises, and eventually got going. Dealer (where I was going at the time) said the clutch was shot and rebuilt it. They did a very poor job initially, very hard to put into gear, and a lot of "chattering" when putting it into reverse and first (always had been easy to shift), they kept telling me it would loosen up and be fine, and that it was fine, took an evaluation from an independent Volvo shop here saying it was not right before they would fix it. Hoped that the occasional strange back end problem would also be fixed, but it wasn't. Had this problem occur in a mild way maybe once every three weeks or so afterwards. If you try to start the car off in first too fast, like a gentle jack rabbit start, it would be more inclined to do the jerk and thump. However, this week when I put the car into first and was taking my foot off the clutch pedal I thought the car was not going to go, it was like the back wheels were not engaging, no jerky movement or thump this time, it did move after a second or so. This happened again today. The car only does this in first gear just after it is put into gear and I start to accelerate from a stop. Transmission fluid was changed several months ago. I go to the indy shop now. When I mentioned it to the dealer originally got no real response at all from them.
Thanks for any input/insight into this problem.
