'90 240D won't run in reverse 200 1990

This morning I started my '90 240D, put it in reverse and when I gave it gas it sounded & felt like I had run over a pile of scrap metal...clunked & grinded. I put it back in f'wd & it did the same thing. Later, after adding a qt of trans fluid it ran fine in f'wd, but did the same thing when I shifted into reverse and then f'wd gear had the problem again. So, appears to run fine in f'wd as long as I don't shift into reverse. Any ideas?
