driveshaft center bearing question / stone shields? 700

When replacing the carrier bearing/center support has anyone eliminated the circular stone shields/rock guards that are on either side of the bearing? It is a sealed bearing and fairly well protected. Anyone have any experience with this? They don't seem to work well with the aftermarket support, the rubber is too thick! Thanks.
