A/C Retrofit 200 1988

Greetings from SoCal. The AC on my 88 240 DL has not worked in three years and I now need to get it working. My independent Volvo tech quoted $700 to retrofit the AC to r134 from r12. Since I have more time than money (don't we all?)I have been doing a little info gathering and have found the Volvo kit for $210 from Groton.

I have absolutely no AC experience and am curious as to the difficulty of performing this retrofit myself. I have done tune-ups, water pump replacement, tranny service/flush, brakes and rotors. I will be doing throttle body cleaning, timing belt (water pump and electric fan conversion while I'm in there)soon. Poly bushing replacement, front and rear are also in the plans.

Any and all considerations / suggestions will be much appreciated. I am not under any time constraints, so carefully following instructions is a given. One thing that makes me hesitate is hearing rumors(?) of refrigerant cans exploding and causing severe injury.
