Loss of AC refrigerant dangerous for environment? 700

I just ask this stupid question because I saw at the junker,
how the workers there empty the cars liquids.
To empty the AC refrigerant they poke with a screwdriver
into one of the AC hoses - pffft. - Done!
What do you guys think?
