So I recently got a new timing belt put on... had my mech do it since I needed a bunch of other items worked on that I don't have the facilities or experience to do safely. Having read a bit on this board and in the FAQ I asked my mech if I needed to reseat (loosen/retighten) the timing belt tensioner after 500-1000 miles and he said it wouldn't need it at all.
Now I have respect for the cllected knowledge and experience of the brickboard, but I also know that my mechanic is EXCELLENT; he backs up everything he does for a full year (parts and labor), I've never had any problems with his work in the slightest, and he always has a backlog of 2-4 weeks from all the customers. He's a one man volvo shop (all years all models) and is the rare "honest mechanic". In fact, he's diagnosed mistakes made on past fixes by other mechanics and explained/repaired them, sometimes free of charge (depending on the scope, etc.). I mean hell, this is a mechanic who put in a nearly new m46+od (parts/labor) for $500 after mine died on a trip to VT because he told me it "looked like it was worn, but should work without any issues for teh foreseable future"... pretty stand-up guy.
Anyway, is his statement correct? Is the tensioner reseating just kind of an anal safety check or is it something truly necessary? I had the seals done at the same time so I'm not worried about the belt getting slick or anything, is this why he said it wasn't nbecessary? Should I go ahead and do it myself anyway? The belt was a Roulunds if it matters.
Just looking to check in and get some opinions from the bboard side of teh equation. I asked him a number of times point blank if he confirmed he was 100%.
Thanks in advance,
rt
