Weak Spark/Coil Check?? 200 1986

Everyone,
I was checking spark on my 86 245 chasing down poor idle. I had the lead off number 1 cyl with a good spare spark plug while the engine was running (albeit a little rough) I was told to check out the health of the spark by looking to make sure it is nice blue colour.
Mine is blue but with a fair bit of orange/red. Is this a vaild check? if mine is too reddish should I replace the coil?
