Different compression ratios for B23's??? 200 1983

Bricksters:
In doing an engine transplant (original B23 with 240Kmiles with freshly rebuilt 83 B23). Everything is going OK but I have a deep concern: The original B23 had a standard trannny and the transplant had an automatic tranny.
From reading different sites on the internet I have learned that standard tranny B23's had a 9.6 compression ratio and the auto's had 10.2 compression ratio. This means that to prevent pinging in the car ( I'm keeping the std tranny), we will have to use high octane gasoline.
Is this information still relavent? Or is it from the "good ole days"? Should I just go ahead and use regular gas and put up with the pinging?
What say you, O volvogurus?
Gracias,
el Raidman
