50 wt oil in 240? 200

my local mechanic told to me when 240's get up in miles you should run 50 wt year round,does anybody agree with this.my 87 has 235,000 on it and runs great and he says it will goto 500,000 with the 50 wt.and other normal maintance? any feed back would be greatly appreciaterd. thanks,cass
