To retrofit AC or not to retrofit?? 700 1986

Our coolant in the AC needs to be recharged. I know there is a retrofit kit to allow us to use R134 ?? (not sure exactly the number). Anyway, does anyone have an opinion regarding how well these retrofits work in the long term as compared to forking out the big bucks to recharge with the original Freon?
