rattle making me crazy! 200 1984

Hello again, I try to believe there are no stupid questions. If you think this one is lame I'm sorry but I'm kinda stumped with what should be a fairly easy problem to figure out. In my 84 240 DL wagon there is a serious rattle in what hears like the interior of the tail gate area. I’m open to ANY suggestions! I’ve removed the spare, jack and all loose items. Underneath everything seems tight, no rattles. I’ve had the guts of the tail gate exposed (pulled the carpet off and looked inside) to find nothing too fishy. The central locking system works on all doors except the tail gate if that has any influence on your advice. This rattle makes me want to drive off the side of a bridge so save my life and give some direction. There is an amazing amount of wisdom and experience on this board and I am so grateful.
