Oil filter change with no mess? 200 1987

Has anyone found a clever way to remove the oil filter without spilling anything on the chassis parts below it? I try to do it as carefully as I possibly can, keeping the top upwards, but I still manage to make a mess. Are there any other ways than just covering the exposed parts with rags before I start? I hate to see that puddle under the car after what should have been an easy oil change, and it's coming from an oil soaked chassis.
-Prevents rusting, though!

Erling.
