RE:alt. light followup 200 1989

I got under the car after removing the alternator-what a mess! All the wiring in that little harness to the alt. are just melded together.Is this common and what would cause this? A new alternator was installed last Fall(when I broke down on the road)and the wiring was fine.Thanks
