A/C Fuse blowing 200 1987

My 87 345 fuse #12 blows whenever I turn on the A/C. All other items on that fuse will work, but if I turn on the A/C - boom it blows.
I figure it is the compresssor, since I checked the wiring and it looks okay.
I dont want to spend 100's of dollars fixing this so for a goof I put in a 16Amp fuse (suppossed to be 8) and the A/C is working and the fuse seems to be holding. I am wondering however if this "fix" will end up causing more problems or if this means that the problem isnt the compressor after all. ANY INSIGHT APPRECIATED.
