AT overdrive - sudden death? 200

The overdrive on my '83 245 auto seems to have gone out. My girlfriend was driving the wagon back, and she said dropped out of OD with no provocation, and now it won't engage again. She got it back here, and I drove it around the block - sure enough, no OD. Button won't do squat. I checked the fluid, and it was at the MIN level for hot, so I topped it off. Again, no OD.

Can the solenoid die a sudden death? I haven't had a chance to test anything out yet. Also, how much do the solenoids cost? They look to be very expensive for MT, but I didn't see a price for the AT solenoid.

Thanks,
Pat
