heater core, monday morning and steam coming from my air vents 200

Ahhhh only on monday does my brick give me problems. This monday I started and drove my '79 245 to the gas satation where i was feeling a little chilly and decided to put on the heat. Well, the heat came on with a bunch of steam to boot and yes it was that wonderful aroma of "locker room" as my wife calls it,..
My question is this. The car has never (since i bought it) had a working blower motor. Now it seems that it has developed a leak somewhere inside the blower assembly hence the steam. Am i better off removing the whole unit or taking out the fan and the core?? I am not concerned with A/C loss because i cut that out a while ago. and, where the hell does that squirrl cage fan attach to the frame??? i have a parts car that i can be careless with but the '79 wagon i need to be good to. thanks

all steamed up in mass.
