This puppy is overheating 200

I have replaced the water pump. The old one was shot to the point of no return. After replaceing the water pump the car would run warm going down the freeway and then suddenly the temp would drop and stay in the range where it normally runs. I replaced the t stat thinking it was operating sometimes sometimes not. There was no change. I did notice that there were aluminum fillings around the t stat it put you in mind of stop leak, judging from the looks of the old water pump I beleive theat is where the fillings came from. I am left with the radiator or the thermostatic clutch fan. The clutch fan seams to be working. Should I flush the radiator, buy a new one or is there another avenue to explore?
Thanks in advance for everyones help
