92 960 Hesitates on accelleration 900 1992

The wife in her 92 960 with 165000 miles is complaning about a problem that has gotten worse to the point she is afraid to drive it.

The issue is that the car has an intermittant hesitatation under acceleration from a stop or onto a freeway that has become dangerous.

When it happens, no matter har far you push the gas pedal, there is a long lag and then the power starts witha whoosh.

And then it's fine till it happens again which is whenever?

No other problesm to complain of. I'm meticulous with my maintenance.

Any thoughts?
