I've got this 700 TD wagon that is in beautiful shape other than that the engine is smoking pretty bad now. I found a VW shop in San Diego that has rebuilt these engines before and has all the parts "in stock" since it is really a VW engine anyway.
So the question is - if I get this thing rebuilt can I hope to get a few years of trouble free operation? I'm trying to guage if it is worth it - as I said the rest of the car is in excellent condition - engine has 172,000 on it. From my understanding of what is "wrong" with this engine - namely the lubrication issues in the last two cylinders (and since I drive mostly highway) a rebuild could do the trick. I also would switch over to bio-diesel which I understand to have better lubricity than standard diesel fuel.
