Differences between '87 and '90 turbo motors? 700 1987

Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone is familiar with major differences between the '87 and '90 740 Turbo models. I have a '90 turbo, and I am in the process of transplanting an engine from an '87 Turbo. I didn't notice before I dropped the engine in (unfortunately) but there appears to be a difference in the distributor. The '90 motor has a shaft sticking out of the rear of the cam, where the rotor sticks on. The '87 motor just has a hollow space in the back of the cam. Does anyone happen to know if the shaft is part of the cam, or a removable part that I need to somehow attach to the new head? I talked to the local volvo parts place and they said something about '87 and '90 models using a different ignition system, but i'm not sure if this is true or not. I am used to the B21FT engine, which uses a different type of distributor. I did find a flywheel position sensor (or something like that) in the trans on the '87 car, and I bolted it in, just in case I need to use it for something.

Also, I am curious if the '87 motor has different pistons (lower compression?) than the '90 motor, since the '90 uses the mitsu turbo. The '87 car did not come with a turbo but I believe it originally used a garrett. Is the mitsu turbo compatible with an engine built for a garrett, or is the engine built exactly the same?

Any advice (including topics i havent addressed here) would be highly appreciated. Again, I have an '87 B230FT going in a '90 740 turbo. I am mainly concerned about whether the 87 model uses a different ignition system/distributor than the '90.

thanks so much,

Justin
