Change battery 900 1991

I want to change the battery on my 91 940 wagon. It has what one of the books says is the right battery, but it is smaller than the box. I don't know the age or condition, but I want to have confidence in it. Is there any reason why I can't buy a #24 that fits the box and is a bit higher too? Height is no problem. When I disconnect it will I lose any important computer info? I guess I will have to reprogram the radio, but that is easy.
