Speedo Problems. Speedo works when hot? 700 1986

I recently purchased an 86 740GLE (sedan). I have since gotten it running good, but have an interesting problem with the Speedometer. It will work when the car has been sitting in the sun and the cabin is nice and warm. It will not work when the car is cooled off. I took the Instrument cluster out today and looked over the connections for the speedo and took the speedo out and looked over the circuit board to see if I saw any broken solder joins...none found. I also checked the connector at the rear axle. All of the other gages work fine. When the speedo is working it is right (checked against my GPS). My Questions are:

1. Is there a way to check the sensor with an multimeter?
2. Is there a way to check the speedo with some type of pulse generator.

Any suggestions will be helpful. I like the car but would like to know how fast I am going.

Thanks
Brian
