MacPherson strut - lower spring seat rusted out. 200 1987

The dealership sells a replacement seat which can be welded onto the strut to replace a rusted out seat. $60 for a kit which includes two seats. Has anyone had any experience with this repair technique? My plan is to remove the strut myself, take it to the dealer and have them weld the new seat in place.
