This problem came out of nowhere, the engine has run fine since new, now with 130K miles. The engine will idle, but has no power on acceleration. Revving the engine results in a metallic pinging that seems to come from the intake manifold. Removing spark plug wires one at a time resulted in isolating what sounds like piston slap in #1 cylinder. With the #1 wire disconnected, the piston slap goes away, but the metallic pinging remains and the engine has no power. Basic tune-up: replacing plugs, wires, distributor cap & rotor, valve and timing adjust did not resolve problem. The distributor was disassemled and the fuel injector triggers were gummed up with oil and debris...this obviously had never received prior attention. Once the distributor was cleaned and reassembled though, the engine still idled OK, but spit and sputtered upon acceleration. Acts like a clogged catalytic converter, but obviously this vehicle is not so equipped -- the system is in new condition -- exhaust pipes, mufflers, and tail pipe new. Thought it may be bad fuel, but a fuel sample yielded no water or dirt. Octane boost and drier was added as a precaution, but did not effect poor engine performance. Even running on 5 cylinders, the engine ought to make power, no? Fuel injectors, fuel lines, and injector wiring all appear OK. Would any other fuel injection components cause this problem? Any ideas or suggestions from 164 experts would be truly appreciated. Thanks.
