Which way do the oil cooler hoses go? 200 1984

Long story. I am replacing my very rusty oil cooler lines. I got a nice set from a junk yard attached to the thermostat, so I just stripped the old ones off the car without taking note of which way they went. Well, I think I have 700 series lines, which are subtly different and won't fit. So now I am trying to put the old ones back on, but I'm not sure which way they went. Does the top port on the thermostat connect to the top or bottom of the oil cooler? I am pretty sure it is top to top but I want to make sure.
