Zenith Stromburg questions (164) 140-160 1970

I've got SU HS6 carbs on my 164 right now. It's never
run as well with the SUs as when it had the strombs. The
SUs are rebuilt from Z-Therapy.

I've been thinking of putting the strombs back on to
see if I can get the car running better. To this end I've
taken them mostly apart (top, temp compensator, etc).

I've got 4 carbs -- 2 from my car and 2 from another 164.
I quickly discovered that these things must confuse people
quite a lot since none of them seemed to work correctly.
Either that or I don't understand how these things work.

I took the 2 least bent up bimetalic thingies and fiddled
with them until I got both to close in cold water and open
the same amount in warm water and hot water. This would
seem to be the correct way to make them work, right? Less
air when cold (aka choke) and open the same amount when
hot. How far open should the plungers be in hot water?
I was actually pretty seriously thinking of just JB welding
these things closed, though.

Another thing I discovered was that the springs in the
carbs that were on my car are completely different. One
is 9 inches and has about 35 coils while the other is
7 inches long and has 24 coils. I suppose these might
have about the same spring rates at WOT and idle, but I
can't imagine that this is what uncle olaf thought he was
getting from sir stromburg.

The other 2 carbs had springs that are both the same size
and have the same number of coils. They're both 6 or so
inches long (shorter than the others) and have 35 coils.
I'm thinking of using these, but I have no idea what effect
this will have on things.

Of course, as a kid, I took lots of things apart and got
not many of them back together. My haynes carb manual
doesn't have any actual numbers for springs, it just says
that they should be some color. Of course, all these
springs are just spring colored and covered with soot...
What springs will fit in here? Can I grab springs off of
any old constant velocity carb if I want to fiddle with
different springs? (ie springs from SU/hitachi carbs on
datsuns or springs from 3 carb jaguars or springs from
single ZS carbs on old british cars)

I'm assuming that people yank on the springs to make the
car run leaner and now I've got a crazy pile of mostly
useless springs...
chris
