Plastic airfoil under engine 700 1987

The plastic guard/airfoil fell off my '87 740GLE from underneath the engine. It really ripped at almost every bolt, so the only option is to replace it, which one place I went to said would be $100-200 for the part. Is this really necessary? Is it bad for the engine to have it exposed to the ground like that?
