why are there 2 belts used for the alternator? 200 1985

if anything i would think the a/c compressor would need two instead.

is it ok to run the alternator with only one? if so, which one? reason being, i can't get both belts the same tightness, one slips more than the other. i recently replaced my alternator and the mounting bushings (with polys) along with it so they aren't to blame. also, i'd like to hear how people get their alternator belts tight. what do they pry off of? the water pump? any thoughts helpful.
