After 6 years of valuable service, I finally had to sell the 87 740GLE (188Kmiles). We took the 93 wagon (non turbo, 108K, bought 1 year ago) on vacation through much of NY. Totaled 950 miles. Driving impressions are generally favorable. The seats are definately different from the 740, nearly as comfortable, but not as. The car is much quiter and generally more refined. Performance over the many hills traveled was Ok but definately lacking in climbing capacity. This was not the case with the 740, even though it too was NA. It would be nice to be able to stay in OD but over-ride the lock out bit (in general I preferred the ZF transmission). Gas milage was 27.5 ave,not bad all things considered.
The biggest problem is the dreaded AC loss to vents when climbing (the many) hills. I was able to partially crimp the yellow hose which partially worked.
Can the hose be completely disconnected and plugged? What would the cost be for the dealer/mechanic to fix?
Final grades
Ride, comfort, convenience, happy family....A
Fuel economy..A- (could easily pull 30-32 with the GLE)
Performance....B (underpowered engine/drivetrain combo)
It's a keeper..
