HELP CV joint question – car is in pieces! 900

I am trying to fix the shudder-under-load problem on my 92-960. I tried shimming as per FAQ but it did not work. Then I thought the rubber support on the hanger bearing was worn so I pulled the drive shaft. My car has a CV joint on the drive shaft at the differential. When I try to rotate the joint I detect some play maybe about 0.5 mm at the CV circumference. Should there be detectable play? Is it possible that this is what is causing my shudder? I also have a high frequency vibration at 110 km/h and it gets more noticeable with speed. I think the frequency is too high to be from wheel unbalance and it sounds like the driveshaft vibration I had on my old Nissan 240.

Thanks for your help BRICKSTERS
