My 1990 740 GL wagon, AT, non-T, 8V, 165K, has always run great in hot Arizona until the in-tank (Regina system) fuel pump gave out last week (broken brush wire). It has always taken several seconds of cranking (4 or 5) to start, but has never exhibited any obvious signs of fuel leakage.

I replaced the fuel pump and once again it runs great - then I thought to check out the FPR, and now think it might be bad! FAQs and forum messages have been studied in depth. When I run an outflow line into a bucket, and start the engine at idle speed, a steady flow of fuel comes out - increasing the RPMs does not seem to change the flow rate, and when I put a vacuum pump on it it will hold any amount of vacuum (no leakage) but the flow rate again does not seem to change.

Now, with the engine shut off the outflow stops - I pull the FPR loose and there isn't any pressure behind it. With the FPR off I try blowing (by mouth) into the FPR intake and then the outflow - can't get mouth air through either. I put the vacuum pump on it and it will again hold any amount of vacuum without any leakage, but I still can't get air through it.

If it is working properly should not some vacuum (15 or 20) open it up so that a person can mouth blow air through it?

Also, Volvo has two different FPRs for the 740, and they tell me the Regina system takes part # 6842410 (about $140 before taxes). AutoZone only shows one FPR for the 740GL ($50) - will that one work, or will I have to get one specifically for the Regina system?
