Need an exorcist ... 700 1986

Another one for the list of A/C related problems.
Car is 1986 740T with 230 eng. No problems driving
without A/C. With it, after 20 min car starts getting possessed.
Fluctuation in RPMs, shots off when brake is applied, restarts
fine but is very sluggish. Real PITA when driving on busy
highways with stop and go traffic.
What could it be ? I’m suspecting the A/C compressor, although
it makes no noise, and it does feel cool inside car.
How can I test it to make sure ?
