240 gas gauge red zone

I know the 240 has a 15.8 gallon gas tank. I run mine down to near "E" on the gauge, just past the red/orange zone. I have never added more that about 12-12.5 gallons of gas. Question is, is there really a 3 gallon "reserve" below the E on the gauge...?
