blowing smoke after timing belt fixed ATTN: 'mechanic'

1987 760t (oil-cooled turbo)
just reading through past brickboard posts trying to find out random info about my car when i read about blowing smoke after idling (the owner of the car had a turbo and there was blue/gray smoke coming out after sitting for a couple hours). the person who responded questioned whether or not the timing belt had been worked on before the problem started but didn't say why this was a consideration.
this caught my attention because a month ago i had my timing belt changed and upon picking it up from the mechanics i was told "gee, you have a lot of smoke coming out of your car...was that there before?" "no," i replied, disgusted at hearing that it was "probably internal engine damage" or "the turbo is busted, about a $1,000 fix". disheartened, with no money (i am a college student and this 1987 760t has really drained me over the past four years) i started looking into car loans and used cars...my damn car was smoking so bad i got pulled over for it. i have no AC either so with the windows down, in phoenix i was basically broiling AND breathing in the noxious fumes spewing from my tailpipe. i went to napa and got something called SeaFoam and it seems to have cleared up the problem (added it to my crank case and then got the oil changed and then added some more) for now. BUT, i still want to know what is this business is about the TIMING BELT... i asked the mechanics if they could've possibly broken somthing while working on the belt and they categorically denied breaking anything saying that whatever they did couldn't have possibly caused the problem. so now i want to know the TIMING BELT-SMOKING TAIL PIPE connection.
thanks a lot
trina
