Noisy fuel pump saga continues. 200 1982

My main fuel pump got really noisy after installing a new in tank pump. Jerked out the main pump and replaced it with a junkyard pump, still noisy. Pulled the in tank pump, connections OK and polarity was the same position as the old pump (but no + marking on new pump), fuel hosefrom pump to dip tube, OK. Replaced the new in tank pump with a junkyard one and the noise is much better, not totally gone but more intermittently noisy instead of full time noisy.

My research has indicated 2 things might cure this. Bentley's shows a little fuel dampening device can be installed in the main pump pickup line, apparently this is a Volvo retrofit innovation to address noisy fuel pump issues. The latest IPD catalog also suggests using a post 86 pre pump with higher flow rate in high altitude or warm climate. I'm at 6500 ft so I think I qualify for high altitude.

Anyone tried either one of these solutions and how did they work? Which would you try? Pump+sock is $35/ damper is $50 at FCPGroton.
