The ignition lock on my 1988 760T will not turn. The steering is also locked. Before this happened, I had absolutely no difficulty inserting or turning the key in the ignition, or unlocking the steering. I've tried my unworn backup keys and they also won't turn in the ignition. I've had all my burly friends try to start it, so I'm pretty sure that it's not a jiggle-and-turn problem (to get the steering to unlock).
My problem is: I'm not sure if the steering lock is stuck, so I can't turn the ignition; or the ignition lock is seized, so I can't unlock the steering. I don't want to do anything too destructive (i.e. drill the ignition lock) until I can figure it out.
I've pulled off all the column trim pieces, and the ignition lock is housed in a piece of cast metal with no obvious access points or bolts. I understand that there should be two bolts, with the heads sheared off, that I can EZ-out to remove the ignition lock without being able to turn it. I havent' been able to locate these - maybe the 1988 model is different (I know the ignition lock is on the column vs. on the dash in earlier models)?
Any suggestions for what I should look at next? Do I need to pull the (airbag-equipped) steering wheel? Should I just drill the ignition lock? If so, can I do that myself? How would I remove/disable the steering lock, if that's necessary?
Thanks!
Kim
