Shock absorber replacement 200 1987

My first Ramblings:

I have a 240 GLT UK Spec and am replacing the failed front shock absorber inserts. The new units are Boge Turbo Gas Units but have a smaller diameter piston shaft than the very wide volvo originals. The trusty manual shows the new thinner type like I purchsed, however it shows these fitted in the strut with a rubber grommet on the base of the shock insert and a rubber bumper to the top. My volvo originals had neither of these?
My Volvo dealer does not recognise the old units clearly marked volvo but can sell me a steel alternative top the rubber grommet shown in the manual. Can someone shed any light on this?

Also will I need to buy the rubber bump stops or can I get away without fitting these?

Thanks in anticipation
