How do you keep the timing belt from shifting?? (Last problem before long trip saturday) 200 1987

ok, so the wire harness no start problem has been solved. it seems that some dumbass (by "some dumbass" i generally mean myself) attached the blue/yellow starter wire on the wrong spade connector. what's that other one for, anyway?

well, the latest problem is this. i replaced the timing belt last weekend whuile the car was out of commission. now that it starts, it seems to idle just fine, but the battery light occasionally comes on VERY faintly, and there was a slight burning smell. after i saw the melting timing belt cover, i found out that the timing belt had shifted and started rubbing through. so now what do i do? why would the thing start to move? is there something i forgot?
thanks for the help
