Was '81 a good year for the 240? 200

Greetings all,

Am in process of acquiring a 2nd Volvo ('81 244DL w/auto)and am curious as to your opinions concerning reliability/ease of repair issues for vehicles from that year.

Am now on my 2nd '83 240, present car is a sweet rust free CA wagon w/4sp+ OD.

I know that technology was changing and would like to know what on the 81 would be different than on '83. How many engine parts are different in 2.1 vs 2.3? Will the '81 run on regular gas? Bosch ignition is different than Chrysler on '83, no knock sensor, right?

What about the auto tranny in an '81, how many speeds? Are front end parts (ball joints, for ex.) the same? According to Haynes manual, must remove struts to replace them on "early" models. When did the design change?

I'm not a geek, just as I get older I realize that it's best to do one's homework esp. when $ are at stake.

Regards,

Frank in NE Ohio
