Uh ooh, Speedo..? 200 1980

Hi All,
I have driven for years with an intermittent speedometer. I just spent two days on the highway where it seemed OK most of the time. After getting onto the back roads I suddenly got a horrible repeated cracking noise from below and the speedo jumped back and forth to the beat like it was coming unglued. I could actually feel sharp taps in the shifter. I suspect that the transmission/speedometer driven gears are eating themselves up and I'm afraid to drive it until I get some advice. Any thoughts?
