I'm hoping someone can help me with the sunroof on my '85 744 Turbo.

I've taken apart the sunroof a few times due to a broken bracket and alignment issues so I know my way around just a little bit.

My problem is as follows:

I properly set the sliding brackets that attach to the sunroof panel by making sure they are equal on each side and reinstall the hand crank and gear.
So, at this point the sunroof is straight and true, and should slide back correctly.
When I turn the hand crank to slide the panel back, I feel heavy resistance and then it feels and sounds like something skipping or jumping the gear. It now slides back, but when brought back to the closed position, one side is raised from the other indicating the alignment is off again. Trying to slide it back again causes the same problem and alignment gets progressively worse.

Is this representative of a bad gear drive (hand crank) or a problem with the tracks (corrugated cables) that slide and mesh with the gear drive. I don't really know what these cables are actually called but am thinking that one may be bad or broken. Are they replaceable or do I need to replace the whole sunroof unit?

Any help or info would be highly appreciated.
