Trying to diagnose a no-start problem with an '86 240. Car died after a long drive and refuses to re-start. Cranks, but will not turn over. Multimeter indicates that the coil is receiving power when its + lead is touched to + lead on coil and its - lead to earth (block). However, touching the coil-distributor wire to the engine block whilst cranking does not produce sparking. Same results with two different coils (at least one is "known good").
Does the coil need to receive a signal from the computer in order to "fire"?
Thanks.
