Heater Core Leak – Now What? 900 1992

I have a 1992 Volvo 960 wagon with Electronic Climate Control (ECC).
Symptom #1) My low water light comes on every 300 miles, #2)I smell coolant (sweet odor) especially under hard acceleration, #3) The window fogs a little after shut down if it’s cool outside.
OK, assuming it’s the heater core, do I really have to pull the entire flow control box to get at this thing. If the whole box has to come out, I’d have to disconnect all the air-conditioning hoses as well – Jeeez!
Please Tell me this isn’t true.
