Hi guys,
Well as no one could see a down side (thanks to those who replied, and whose suggestions I took to heart!) I have installed cooling for my relays..I goes like this.. (for those who dodnt remember/didnt see my last post i had just removed the volvo fit graphic so had a cubby hole with no back in it).
Cut speaker grill (panasonic speakers just installed behind volvo grills) to obtain black mesh, bent this to form a back to the cubby hole and pop-riveted in place (carefull drilling that close to the edge!), mounted 2 40mm 12 volt fans on the back of this (bottoms off fans held behind ledge at bottom of cubby hole, sideways motion stopped by cunning (accidental!) position of pop-rivets, tops held in place with black cable tie through mesh.) wired both fans to the earth on the ciggy lighter, wired the positve to a 1 amp fuse, then to the positive on th lighter. Positioned black fitler cut from peice of anti static foam in back of cubby hole against mesh.
Fans start with iginition in 1 or 2 position...almost left the car!!!! Waaaaaaa were they noisy!, this was traced to 2 factors...1 fans doing a bout 6 million rpm and moving a gale...2...cubby hole resinating like a sounding board...
so out it all came, re wired fans in series to decrease speed (and noise!) and installed carefully and scientiffically designed sound deadining to cubby hole - i.e. gaffertapped surface including foam strip to top of cuby hole to deaden it agains radio mount, gafer taped sides and gaffer taped cable tie sideways on in a circle to provide dynamic stiffness to bottom of cubby hole!
re-installed...RESULT!...with the engine off you can hear the fans, butthey are a mutted whirrrr...turn on the air fan at 2 or above and you cant hear them at all!
I suppose I should fit some proper sound deadening to the base of the cubby hole at least...but if it aint broke....dont fix it!
thanks to all for suggestions etc...if anyone is interested i can whip it out and photo it for there reference (email me off list and I will email a photo or 2!)
