crappy sounding exhaust 200

Some part of the exhaust on my 91 245se sounds like $hit. It isn't the rear parts(everything behind the cat is new). If the gasket is bad between the cat and head pipe, will it sound really bad, kinda like a diesel car? I want to get the thing sounding as nice as the car looks :)
