Alternator wiring info 700

HI
I have a 1987 740 GL. I am having problems with my alternator in that it seems to be shorting somewhere and not charging the battery. Can anyone tell me the what wires I should look out for in this situation? There seems to be a few at the back that I do not know what they are for. Also if the plastic has flaked off the wiring is it fine to insulate it with electrical tape or actually to cut off and replace the section of wiring? any help would be great.....
